Paramhansa Yogananda (sometimes spelled Paramahansa Yogananda) was born in in Gorakhpur, India. He was named Mukunda Lal Ghosh, and was the fourth of eight children. His mother passed away when he was about 11 years old, and soon after he had a vision of Divine Mother, who said, “It is I who have watched over thee, life after life, in the tenderness of many mothers!”.   Even from Yogananda’s time to ours, people have continued to both preserve and adapt yoga. Perhaps one of the most important lessons Awake gleans from Yogananda’s life is that yoga is for the spirit as well as the body, and to honor that we must find deeper meaning in it .

In , Kriyananda came across the book Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda in a bookstore. He quickly read it through, describing it as "the best book I have ever read." Soon after reading the book, Kriyananda hopped on a train and traveled all the way to California to meet this great master from India. The feature documentary Awake: the Life of Yogananda, produced by CounterPoint Films with cooperation from Self-Realization Fellowship, features the entire documentary screenplay interwoven with over spectacular four-colour visuals, including a considerable collection of rare archival photos of Yogananda. This is one of the very few documentaries ever realise a feat of box office sales.

Paramahansa Yogananda was born as Mukunda Lal Ghosh in Gorakhpur, India, into a Bengali Hindu family. The book begins with his childhood family life, to finding his guru, to becoming a monk and establishing his teachings of Kriya Yoga meditation. The book continues in This award-winning work brings to light the deeper truth and beauty of a well-loved but long-misunderstood masterpiece— The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. With an in-depth commentary on every quatrain, Paramahansa Yogananda reveals the profound kinship between the Rubaiyat’s hidden metaphysical philosophy and India’s ancient science of yoga.
